Obituary

CHICOPEE – Walter C. “Charlie” Daviau, 77, of the Aldenville section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, January 26, 2017. He passed into Eternal Life at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born Walter Charles Nichols in Springfield on November 25, 1939 and was raised at Brightside for Families and Children in West Springfield. Raised in the Protestant faith, he served the Catholic Masses at Brightside until the age of 21 and was then Baptized into the Roman Catholic faith. He was adopted by his loving parents, the late Edward P. and Rita C. (Labonte) Daviau. He graduated from Holyoke Trade High School and later lived in the Aldenville section of Chicopee for many years. He was a well-known finish carpenter and cabinet maker and was employed as a maintenance carpenter for Big Y Supermarkets throughout the area. He was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Elder Council 69, both in Chicopee. He was a member and past president of the Chicopee Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee and was a longtime Chicopee Colleen Float builder. He also was a member of the Tigers Athletic Club and Moose Family Center, both in Chicopee and a former race car driver at Riverside Park in Agawam. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his loving sister, Dianne R. Haney who was Called Home on March 8, 2014. He leaves his loving brothers and sisters, Edward A. Daviau and his wife, Sandy, of Rowe, Therese B. Boncavage and her husband, Gerald, of East Berlin, PA, Richard A. Daviau of Chicopee, Roger J. Daviau of Warren, Suzanne M. Grandmont and her husband, Rene, of Palmer and Raymond F. Daviau and his wife, Gail, of Chicopee; his best friend who was like his brother, Frank Spinelli of Chicopee; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Daviau and Labonte families. His funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, January 31, 2017 beginning at St. Pierre-Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday morning, January 31, 2017 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. before the Mass. The parking lot and main entrance are located at the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in his memory to Sunshine Village, 75 Litwin Lane, Chicopee, MA 01020.
