Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Madalene K. (Katsaros) Alphas, 95, of the East Forest Park section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. She passed into Eternal Life at Life Care Center of Wilbraham surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Haverhill on July 27, 1921, a beloved daughter of the late Speros and Helen (Christopoulos) Katsaros. She was raised in Haverhill and graduated from Haverhill High School. Following her marriage, she moved to Springfield in 1947. She was employed as a mortgage counselor at the former SIS Bank in Springfield. Active in her Orthodox faith, she was a member of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield and also was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society and the Daughters of Penelope. Above all, she loved all of her family and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Peter J. Alphas who was Called Home on November 9, 1972. She leaves her two loving children, Katherine A. Walas and her partner, Mark Leger, and John S. Alphas and his partner, Judith Najemy; her three cherished grandchildren, Jason P. Walas, Luke A. Walas and his wife, Carey, and Kaeley E. Alphas; her cherished great-granddaughter, Ella M. Walas; her dear brother, John Katsaros and his wife, Mary, of Haverhill; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Alphas and Katsaros families. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her loving son-in-law, Alan D. Walas who was Called Home on August 16, 1995; her three dear brothers, Sotiris, George and S. Charles Katsaros; and her dear sister, Ann Ziehl. Madalene will Lie in State on Monday, January 30, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2320 Main Street, Springfield, MA 01107. Her burial will be private at Linwood Cemetery in Haverhill. Her funeral arrangements are entrusted to the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. Her family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in her memory to the Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, c/o 22 Saint George Road, Springfield, MA 01104.
