Obituary

Sawyer, John J., Jr., of Milton, passed away peacefully in the company of his loving family on Friday, January 20, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Loretta M. (Denault) Sawyer and devoted father of Lynne M. Gomes & her husband Michael of Bellingham, Julie A. Smith of Sandwich, Kevin M. Sawyer of Milton and Major Timothy P. Sawyer U.S. Army and his wife Tancy of Princeton, as well as the brother of Janet Broderick of AZ and cherished “Grampa” of 9 grandsons & 7 granddaughters. Mr. Sawyer is also survived by many loving nieces & nephews.

A 1964 graduate of Boston Technical High School, John went on to become a piping designer, retiring from Shaw Group of Canton and a late part time employee of Bob’s Speed & Auto Parts. John served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. An involved father, John coached his sons’ Milton Youth Hockey teams and was a familiar face around the rinks. He served as the former President of Milton Youth Hockey as well as the South Shore Conference. John also coached his daughters’ Milton Youth Softball teams and was involved with the youth soccer as well.

John was a longtime performer and advocate of the drumcorps. Starting as a youth he played snare drum for the St. Kevin Emerald Knights in Dorchester. With age he never lost his passion for the drumcorps and could be found teaching and inspiring young musicians. John played his adult years with the Reilly Raiders of PA. In addition, his love of singing could be heard with his performances as a member of the Elite Group of Princemen Chorus.

John was a faith filled man, dedicating many years to St. Agatha Parish. He served as a Eucharistic Minister alongside his wife, Loretta.

John’s biggest joy was his family. He would spend his free time attending his grandchildren’s games, recitals, talent shows, concerts, and school activities. Fond memories with Grampa include our annual outings to Canobie Lake Park, family vacations, parties, and gatherings. He was always the life of the party and was never without his contagious smile.
