Obituary

CHICOPEE – Andria H. (Steffano) Hemond, 93, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, January 18, 2017. She passed into Eternal Life surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Holyoke on February 8, 1923, a beloved daughter of the late Andrew and Clyda (Miller) Steffano. She was raised in Chicopee, graduated from Chicopee High School and lived in Granby for many years before returning to Chicopee around 1969. During World War II, she assisted the war effort making bayonet handles and eventually moved on to work as a medical secretary. During her leisure time, she was an avid gardener, enjoyed crocheting, rug hooking, knitting and drinking champagne with her granddaughters. She loved her animals and was known over the years to have dogs, cats and many other friends including “Jody the Crow”, a pet rat, and even a pet skunk. She was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee and was a member of the Yankee Division Veterans’ Association Auxiliary. Above all, she loved her family and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Roger R. Hemond who was Called Home on April 29, 1996. She leaves her three loving children, Bruce D. Hemond and his wife, Christine, Sherryl M. Gelinas and her husband, Robert, and Mark R. Hemond and his wife, Debrah, all of Chicopee; and her four cherished granddaughters whom she adored, Anna Hemond, Sarah Gelinas, Amanda Gelinas and Kristy Hemond. Her funeral will be held on Thursday morning, January 26, 2017 beginning at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her burial will follow the Mass at Notre Dame Cemetery, 63 Lyman Street, South Hadley, MA 01075. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located at the rear of the funeral home.
