Obituary

Tiro, Anthony "Chubby"- Of Saugus, formerly of Chelsea, January 11th. Devoted husband for 58 years to Anna (Damiano). Beloved father of Robert Tiro and his wife Denise of Wakefield, Robin Tiro-Kinnon and her husband Stephen of Lynnfield and Anthony Tiro and his wife Lisa DiBerto-Tiro of Saugus. Dear brother of Robert Tiro of Wollaston and Dennis Tiro of Lynn. Cherished grandfather of Robert Tiro, Rose Tiro, Brooke Tiro, Stephen Kinnon, Nicholas Kinnon, Anthony "TJ" Tiro and his wife Stephanie, Gianna Tiro and Bria Tiro. Also lovingly survived by his great granddaughter Ayla. At the request of the family, funeral services and interment were private.

A longtime member of the Chelsea community until moving to Saugus, "Chubby" passed away at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford after a brief illness. A friend to everyone he met, as Cary Shuman's article in the Chelsea Record stated, some knew him for his athletic excellence, a brilliant multi-sport career that took him from Essex St. and Shurtleff School to Chelsea High School, where he was an All-Scholastic in football and track, to a Division 1 college football scholarship at Kansas State University, where he graduated with the class of 1959. For his coaching, he was the Chelsea High head football coach for 5 years, for over 20 years, the Malden High School indoor and outdoor track coach and also the coach for Boston State College. He was the founder and President of the Chelsea Pop Warner, using his own money to start the program, a member and Past Exaled Ruler of the Chelsea Elks and a member of the Knight's of Columbus Council #83. "Chubby" served the City of Chelsea also as a member of the Chelsea School Committe, serving as it's Chairman on numerous occations in his 30 year term as a member and was also the Chairman for the Shore Collaborative. His other notable accomplishments included being inducted into both the Chelsea High and Golden Tornado Halls of Fame.
