Obituary

CHICOPEE – Gertrude T. (Gosselin) Provost, 92, a longtime resident of Shirley Street in Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, January 17, 2017. She passed into Eternal Life at Mount Saint Vincent Care Center in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Holyoke on February 1, 1924, a beloved daughter of the late Arthur and Marie Ange (Duclos) Gosselin. She was raised in Holyoke, attended the former Precious Blood Elementary School and lived in Holyoke for many years before moving to Chicopee in 1952. In 1940, she attended the Federal Works Agency and she received certification in the Household Workers Training Program. She became an excellent baker and enjoyed making many special treats for her family and her many friends. She was last employed as an Assistant Cook for the Chicopee School Department and had previously worked at the former National Blank Book and Totsy Manufacturing, both in Holyoke. She enjoyed entertaining, especially at Christmas, taking care of her home, playing cards, and shopping. Most of all, she was a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. Active in her Catholic faith, she was a longtime communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Raymond C. Provost who was Called Home on January 28, 2015. They were married on September 1, 1947 at the former Precious Blood Church in Holyoke and were blessed with over 67 years of happiness together. She leaves her three loving children, Wayne J. Provost and his wife, Gloria, of Myrtle Beach, SC, Lynn P. Larrabee and her husband, Lawrence, of West Springfield and Gail M. Boone and her husband, William, of Chicopee; her three cherished grandchildren, Scott R. Provost and his wife, Tabitha, Colin W. Boone and his wife, Nicole, and Laura T. Boone; her three cherished great-grandchildren, Jacob Provost, Juliette Provost and Clara Boone; her dear brother, Raymond Gosselin and his wife, Maureen, of Holyoke; her two dear brothers-in-law, Martin Shevlin of Plant City, FL and Richard Provost of Temecula, CA; and her three sisters-in-law, Noella Dame and her husband, Robert, of Southampton, Gloria Anderson and her husband, Andy, of Little River, SC and Jeannette Provost of Chicopee. In addition, she leaves a devoted friend, Joan Hooper of Chicopee; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Provost and Gosselin families. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her dear brothers and sisters, Duke Gosselin and his wife, Rachel, Ubie Gosselin, Pearl Shevlin, Red Gosselin and his wife, Rita, Fleurette Gosselin, Donald Gosselin and Bobby Gosselin. Her family would like to thank Gertrude’s caregivers at Mount Saint Vincent for their compassionate care as well as her caregivers who took such wonderful care of both mom and dad at their home. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, January 24, 2017 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 7:45 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her Committal Service will follow the Mass at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, January 23, 2017 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to the Mount Saint Vincent Care Center Resident Council Fund, 35 Holy Family Road, Holyoke, MA 01040.
