Herbert C. Hamilton Sr. of Whitman died peacefully in his sleep in Raynham on Sunday morning, January 15. Herbert was born in Cambridge in 1922, the second son of Willard K and Lydia F Hamilton. Many of his friends know Herbert as Hap; his grandchildren know him as Bunka.
Herbert graduated from Sumner High School in Holbrook and joined the Navy in 1942 after completing technical courses in aviation mechanics at Wiggins Airport in Norwood. He served in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a First Class Petty Officer - Aviation Machinist Mate. Upon returning to civilian life, he worked as a mechanic at Hamilton’s Jenny Station owned by his father at the corner of Norfolk Road and South Franklin Street in Holbrook. He later worked as a milkman for Wright Brothers English’s Dairy Farm in Holbrook, and later retired as a machinist in 1984 from Procter and Gamble after a twenty-four year career.
Herbert was husband to the late Helen (Moran) Hamilton also known as Huggy. They were high school sweethearts and were married in February of 1946.
Herbert is survived by his five children – Herbert Jr. from Berkley, Massachusetts; Harold from Hoover, Alabama; Pauline Medairos from Duxbury, Massachusetts; Christine Spillane from Wareham, Massachusetts; and Faith Hamilton from Middleboro, Massachusetts. He has ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren and one great, great- granddaughter.
Herbert enjoyed antiquing, playing the organ, and spending summers on Cape Cod.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Funeral Services on Thursday, January 19, at 12:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Calling hours will be held prior to the service from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Interment will follow in the Wendell Cemetery, Brookville.
