Walter Gibau, 84, of New Bedford, passed away January 11, 2017 peacefully in his home surrounded by his devoted family and loved ones.
Walter was born in New Bedford, the son of the late Louis and Margaret (Rosa) Gibau.
In his passing he leaves behind his wife Lucie F. (Gadapee) Gibau whom he married 1973 until his passing. In 1953 he was 20 and joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Camp Kilmer, NJ until he served in the Korean war as a Corporal and received 3 medals, the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Walter had 6 children and as most men he worked to support his family and give them a good life. Walter worked at Beck Seafood, B&G Fish Co. and other companies throughout the fish industry for most of his life until he retired from Sea View Fillet.
In his spare time Walter enjoyed spending time with his family going to his mother's on Sunday as well as playing Cribbage and Spades and caring for his 2 dogs, Piglet and TJ, and 4 cats, Spade, Shadow, Putt Putt and Shitty Shitty.
Walter is survived by his wife; his children Walter Gibau Jr. and his spouse Corilynn Gibau, Glen Gibau and his companion Merlin, Brian Gibau and his companion Keioshi, Jason Gibau and his spouse Meghann Logan, Nicole Gibau her companion Blaine Fuller and Mau, and Bernadette Cleaves; 6 grandchildren Kim, Keith, Kassandra, and Delanie Gibau, Mark and Thomas Cleaves; 9 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; 3 Siblings, Arthur Gibeau, Irene Daniels and June Gomes; 30 plus nieces and nephews; 2 sisters-in-law and 1 brother-In-law.
In his passing Walter joins his late sisters, Rose Gonsalves and Elsie Gomes, and his late brother, Donald Gibeau.
His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 18th at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, January 17th from 4-8 PM.
