Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Theodore A. Cupak, 78, of the North End section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, January 5, 2017. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Holyoke on May 28, 1938, a son of the late Theodore G. Cupak and Helen A. (Michalski) Cupak. He was raised in Chicopee, attended Chicopee High School before graduating from Wilbraham Academy. Following high school, he attended UMass at Amherst. He was last employed as a manager at Columbia Bicycle in Westfield and had previously worked for Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. He also ran his own cord wood business along with his brother, Michael, for many years cutting trees from the Quabbin Reservoir area. During his leisure time, Ted was an avid outdoorsman, loved animals and enjoyed spending time walking in the woods. He was a longtime Community Activist and member of the New North Citizens Council. He was also a member of the North End Community Watch, sponsored by the Springfield Police and the Massachusetts State Police. Active in his Catholic Faith, he was a daily communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his son, Brian O’Brien; and his sister, Dolores Cupak. He leaves his son, Gary T. O’Brien and his wife, Sherry, of Thorndike, his longtime fiancée, Jean Nay of Hinsdale, NH; his four grandchildren, Ashlinn, Andrew, Annie and Dakota O’Brien; his two brothers, Darryl Cupak and his wife, Theresa, of Westfield and Michael Cupak and his wife, Rose, of Granby; his sister, Helen Horn and her husband, Michael, of Ogunquit, ME; his niece, Lauren Kleciak of Spencer; and his many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Cupak, O’Brien and Nay families. His funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, January 10, 2017 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. His burial will be private at the convenience of his family. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, January 9, 2017 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. His family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in his memory to the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society, PO Box 6307, Springfield, MA 01101-6307.
