Eileen M. (Doyle) Atwood, 95, of New Bedford died Thursday, January 5, 2017 at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home after an extended period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Raymond M. Atwood.
Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Fred and Katherine (Daley) Doyle, she lived in New Bedford for all of her life.
She was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
Eileen was a graduate of Holy Family High School, class of 1938 and Bridgewater State College, class of 1942. She was formerly employed as a third grade teacher in Dartmouth for more than 37 years, a job she truly loved.
Eileen was a past member of the Country Club of New Bedford, the Catholic Women's Club, Delta Kappa Gama, and The Anthony Beach Association.
She enjoyed playing cribbage, golfing and spending time with her family.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen F. Carter and her husband Stephen and Frederica DeMoranville, all of Dartmouth; six grandchildren, Erin Burdman and her husband Christopher, Kevin Carter and his wife Sara, Sean Carter and his wife Jill, Trevor Carter and his wife Jenna, and Kyle and Allison DeMoranville; and nine great-grandchildren, Liam, Ryan and Alden Burdman, and Owen, Brennan, Kyla, Kaeleen, Taegan, and Reid Carter.
Her Funeral will be held on Monday at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2-4 PM.
