Obituary

Smith, Margaret Ann Duley, devoted wife and loving mother—whoa, whoa, whoa—that’s not how she’d want this to read! Margaret Ann Duley Smith, originally and proudly of Maysville, Ky., passed from this life to the next on December 24 after giving leukemia an impressive run for its money. A mischievous, sassy, and oh-so-bossy woman, she loved her family fiercely, cared for her friends deeply, and adored her grandchildren (Jessie, Erin and Connor) without limits.

Her favorite things in this world were to study the Bible (shout out to Beth Moore, Priscilla Shirer and Kaye Arthur), teach Bible classes, read books, listen to music much too loudly, watch sickeningly gory medical shows on TV, watch her granddaughters dance and hear her grandson sing, be home with her family, play Rook with Jim and Norma Emory and games with Rolland and Carrie Smith, and attend U of L women’s volleyball games. Go Cards!

She taught elementary school and was a children’s librarian in Jefferson County for 28 years, and subsequently had the attention span of a first-grader for the rest of her life. She was proud of her master’s degree in Library Science from Spalding University.

She is survived by her adoring husband of 65 years, John Terry Smith, who, the first time he saw her in 1948 said, “I’m going to marry that girl.”; her son John Duley (Teresa); daughter Susan Marie; grandchildren Jessie Elizabeth, Erin Margaret, and Connor Morgan Smith; brother George Robert Duley; nieces, nephews, (great and great-great) and cousins; countless children of her heart, including Shannon Cambron and Sharon Holbert; and a large circle of truly wonderful friends.

As much as she loved all of us—and it was impressive in its magnitude—she loved Jesus every bit as much and always looked forward to the day she would see him face to face.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday at Epiphany United Methodist Church 7032 Southside Drive. Memorial visitation will be at Owen Funeral Home 5317 Dixie Hwy. 1:00 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday.

She thought spending money on flowers was silly, so we ask that you consider making a donation in her memory to Southwest Community Ministries, 8504 Terry Road, Louisville, Ky., 40258.
