Gertrude L. (Mackinaw) Horsley, age 96 of Brockton died December 22, 2016 at Good Samaritan Medical Center after a period of failing health. Gertrude was the loving wife of the late William C. “Cliff” Horsley for 50 years.
Born and raised in Brockton, Gertrude was a daughter of the late George and Katherine (Troy) Mackinaw. She was a 1938 graduate of Brockton High School and a 1942 graduate of Bridgewater Normal School. For over 27 years, she was an elementary school teacher beginning her career in a one room school house in Gay Head on Martha’s Vineyard. She later spent many years teaching at Central Elementary School in E. Bridgewater, retiring in 1983.
Gertrude loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and traveling with her husband to see family and friends. In later years she enjoyed reconnecting with old high school and college friends.
Gertrude is survived by her children, Mary T. Horsley of San Diego, CA and Bob Horsley and his wife Shelly of Round Rock, TX. She also leaves her grandchildren; Michael Horsley and his wife Elizabeth, Kristen, Kelsey and Meghan Horsley and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Kay Moneghan and Albert Mackinaw.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont St (Rte 123) Brockton on Thursday, 4-7pm. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home on Friday at 8am for a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 9am. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.
