Phillip J. Orlando, age 88, of Reading formerly of Medford, passed away peacefully, December 19, 2016, at the Lahey Hospital and Medical Clinic in Burlington, following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Santa J. (Fazio) with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. Born in Somerville he was the son of the late Dominic P. and Catherine A. (Goode) Orlando.
Phillip was raised and educated in Somerville. He honorably served in the United States Navy during WWII. Phillip was a retired Master Barber and held the distinction of being the youngest person to be licensed in Massachusetts. He retired following a 46 year career as a third generation barber owning and operating the Dom and Phil's Barber Shop in Magoun Square, Somerville.
Phillip was an avid reader and true people person. Over the years he collected and amassed a huge volume of clippings of different witticisms that he loved to share with his family, friends and patrons. Phillip was deeply rooted in his Catholic faith which gave him great comfort and strength throughout his life. He was a daily communicant and also served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Theresa Church for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in North Reading and was also active with the Sons of Italy and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. However, his greatest joy was his family and he cherished his time spent with them and was most proud of all their many accomplishments. He will be greatly missed.
Phillip is survived by his devoted children; Sandra J. Pothier and her husband Jerry of Reading, Philip J. Orlando, Jr. and his wife Marie of Reading, Debra A. Marinelli and her husband Jay of Derry, NH. He was the loving grandfather of Gregory, Jason, David and Rachel Pothier, Rebecca Timoney, Alexander and Heather Orlando, Alyssa, Jillienne, and Krysta Marinelli. Loving great grandfather of Jason R. Pothier, Jr., Heidi and James Timoney. Brother of the late Mary Theresa McCarthy and Donald Orlando.
Funeral from the McLaughlin-Dello Russo Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., WOBURN, Friday, December 23rd, at 12 p.m. followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Theresa of Lisieux Church, 63 Winter St., North Reading, at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Thursday from 4 thru 8 p.m. Services will conclude with military honors and burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
