Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – James W. “Jimmy” Denny, 76, a longtime resident of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Saturday, December 17, 2016. He passed into Eternal Life at Wingate at East Longmeadow surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Springfield on February 13, 1940, a beloved son of the late Malhim Abraham Denny and Jennie (Majowski) Denny who was Called Home on January 29, 2014. He was raised and schooled in Springfield and was a lifelong resident of the city. During his younger years, he was active at the Springfield Boy’s Club and was a lifeguard at the Emily Bill Park on Franklin Street in the North End of Springfield. He was also a well-known saxophone player and played for many local bands including George Benson. He was employed his entire life as a Barber at Ciro’s Barbershop in the South End of Springfield and later for Ciro at Mall Barber at the Eastfield Mall in Springfield. Jimmy had a large following who sought his expertise in cutting hair. He made many friends and had many loyal customers for over 50 years and worked up until his recent illness. He was a good listener, a great story teller and was known as a “Dapper Dan”. During his leisure time, he enjoyed horseracing, sports betting, dog racing and boxing. His favorite boxer was the great Muhammad Ali whom he had the pleasure of meeting. He was a big fan of the New York Giants and the New York Yankees. Most of all, he was a quiet man who loved his family, his many friends and his loyal customers. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving sister and brother-in-law, Nafie Jolicoeur who was Called Home on November 25, 2010 and her husband, Albert Jolicoeur who was Called Home on January 21, 2013. He leaves his loving niece, Lisa A. Jolicoeur-Richards and her husband, Douglas Richards, of Monson; his two loving nephews, James Jolicoeur and his wife, Heather, of Hampden and Michael Jolicoeur and his wife, Sharon, of Wilbraham; his seven cherished grandnephews and grandnieces, Tyler Shank, Aimee Jolicoeur, Jackie Jolicoeur, James Jolicoeur, Joseph Jolicoeur and his wife, Kara, David Jolicoeur and Michael Jolicoeur; his cherished great-grandnephew, Thomas Jolicoeur; and his many dear friends, loyal customers and extended members of the Denny, Majowski and Jolicoeur families. His funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, December 21, 2016 at 10 a.m. at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107 (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.). His burial will follow the Service at Hillcrest Park Cemetery, 895 Parker Street, Springfield, MA 01129. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute/The Jimmy Fund, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168 or to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
