Michael J. "Joe" Whyte, 96 of Medway, formerly of Carver, Milton, Attleboro, and Co Galway, Ireland passed away Thursday, December 8, 2016 at the Milford Genesis Center surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary K. (Mannion) Whyte who passed away in 1986.
Born on August 16, 1920 in Galway, Ireland he was the son of the late James Bernard and Bridget (Higgins) Whyte. Mr. Whyte was raised in Ireland and had been a resident of Carver, MA since 1983.
Michael worked as a Street Car Operator on the Green Line for the MBTA for almost 30 years. After retiring from the MBTA he worked at Stop & Shop in Plymouth for 26 years until the age of 90.
Mr. Whyte was a past president of the Irish Music Club
of Greater Boston, Vice President of the Connacht Ceili Band and was a member of the Boston Carman’s Union #589 and the Commercial Workers of America Union.
He is survived by his children, Mary Ellen Ryan and her husband Robert of Medway, Michael Whyte and his wife Ellen of Attleboro; his five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Sr. Rita Whyte of England. He was the father of the late Joseph M. Whyte and brother of the late Mary Kelman, Thomas Whyte, Theresa Moogan, Kathleen Clesham, John Whyte, Evelyn Creavin, and Sr. Elizabeth Whyte, SMG.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral on Friday, December 16 at 9:15AM from the Ginley-Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber Street, Medway, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Joseph Church, 151 Village Street, Medway at 10:00AM.
Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00-8:00PM in the funeral home.
