Obituary

Hubert Lee Jernigan, Jr. 68, of Enigma passed away Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Naviscent Medical Center in Macon. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2016, at Brookfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Cadwell officiating. Dawn Lyles and Taylor Stanfill will give eulogies. Mr. Jernigan will be laid to rest at Tift Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday, December 12, 2016, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Mr. Jernigan will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.

Lee Frazier, Richard Robbins Sr., Richard Robbins Jr., John Moody Huggins, Seth Dozier, John Domagala, Reed Laycock, Luke Joiner, Hayden Patterson, Austin Frazier, Chad Gay and Lee Boney will serve as pallbearers.

Born September 5, 1948 in Irwin County, Hubert was the son of the late Hubert Lee Jernigan, Sr. and Rheupert Paulk Jernigan. He was a graduate of Tift County High School and, upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country both domestically and abroad. His time of service included Homestead Air Force Base in Homestead, Florida and Kunsan Air Force Base in Gunsan City, South Korea from 1968-1972. Hubert returned and began working for Firestone Tire Company in Albany for 13 years and 9 months. He followed in his father’s footsteps and went to Kennesaw Barber College in Kennesaw, Georgia and took over the family barber business and retired from Jernigan’s Barber Shop in 2013.

He was a devoted Pappy to his grandchildren, an avid hunter and outdoorsman and a talented guitar picker. Hubert’s talents included singing, wood and knife carving and story-telling. He was a fifth grade Sunday School teacher at Northside Baptist Church and a member of Brookfield Baptist Church.

His loves and survivors include his wife of 41 years, Linda Taylor Jernigan of Enigma; his children and their spouses, Dawn and Mark Lyles of Ocilla, Brooke and Jay Laycock of Tifton and Hugh and Brooke Jernigan of Enigma; his sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Jimmy Benefield; and his six grandchildren, Reed Laycock, Taylor Stanfill, Dalton Lyles, Jaycie Lee Laycock, Megan Lyles and Bentley Jernigan; and a host of nieces and nephews.
