Obituary

Marcella C. Wood, 96, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 7, 2016. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Nelson Wood.

Born in Meriden, Connecticut, she was a daughter of Zygmunt J. and Marcella M. (Mocadlo) Czubak. She graduated from Rhode Island State College (URI) in 1938 with a degree in Business Administration and a lifelong passion for knitting. She was employed as Assistant City Treasurer for Central Falls, the RI Unemployment Compensation Board and as a radio announcer for the Polish Program on WFCI and WPRO.

Marcella loved learning, books and reading. She returned to school and obtained her Masters in Library Science in 1974. She thrived as a librarian at St. Philip School and for the Town of Johnston at the Marion J. Mohr Memorial Library and in the Johnston Elementary School System.

She was an active member and Treasurer of the RI Retired Teacher’s Association, the Greater Providence Retired Teacher’s Association, where she served as the Corresponding Secretary, Publicity, and Historian, and the Blackstone Valley Teacher’s Association.

A longtime volunteer with many interests, Marcella was a member of the Saint Philip Ladies Guild, served as a director of the Rhode Island 4H Foundation, a director of the Northern RI Cooperative Extension, was a member of the Rhode Island and Johnston Historical Societies, and the Rhode Island Media Association.

She is survived by her four children, Marcellena M. Wood and husband Guy Klose of North Andover, MA, Charlotte M. Wood-Harrington and husband Andrew Harrington of Needham MA, Peter N. Wood and wife Kathleen of Harmony, RI, Christopher J. Wood and wife Lisa of Pepperell, MA, as well as six grandchildren, Erik Klose, Mark Klose, Alethea Tschetterwood, Nathan Wood and wife Melissa, Peter Wood Jr. and wife Elizabeth, Matthew Wood and four great grandchildren, Colin, Nora, Deirdre and Declan Wood.

She was predeceased by her brother, Zygmunt J. Czubak, Jr.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Monday, December 12, 2016 from 5 to 7pm at the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rte. 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, December 13th, 9:30am at St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville, RI.

Burial will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter, RI.
