Obituary

Jimmy Dale Akins, 84, of Enigma passed into his eternal resting place on Thursday, December 8, 2016, at his residence. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 11, 2016, at Enigma Baptist Church with the Rev. Pete Jones and the Rev. Steve Hand officiating. Mr. Akins will be laid to rest at Turner Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Enigma. The family will receive friends Saturday, December 10, 2016, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Mr. Akins will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.

Josh Moore, Zach Moore, Michael Hand, Blake Hand, Tyler Hand, David Register and Mark Metts will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Donnie Pearson, Ethan Allen, Bobby Metts, Jimmy Middlebrooks, Darwin Walker, O. D. Owens, Jason Griffin, Allen Pope, John Summers, Bud Tucker, Jerry Turner, Dwayne Turner, Leroy Little, Bobby Rowan, Sonny Mathis, Larry Crumley, Jeff Abel, John Bowen, Jerry Hall, Russell Luke, Randy Hand, Keith Gibbs, Buddy Pickard, Darrell Sumner, Melvin Hobbs, Lamar Hogan, Tommy King, Clifford Lee and Johnny King.

Born May 13, 1932 in Enigma, Mr. Akins was the son of the late Roy Akins and Audrey Sydelle Akins. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lonnie and Elsie Yawn; a son-in-law Joey Moore; a brother, Charles “Bo” Akins; and a sister, Joyce Register. He graduated from Enigma High School in 1949 as Valedictorian. He was a retired carpenter and was very dedicated and took great pride in doing a perfect job on all his projects. He was a faithful member and participant at Enigma Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and taught Sunday School for over 60 years. In 2012, the Senior Adult Sunday School class was named in his honor, because of his dedication and support to his Church and Sunday School Class and his Lord. He was also a member the the Enigma Men’s Club and he loved and adored his grandchildren.

Mr. Akins is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carolyn Yawn Akins of Enigma; one son, James Akins of Enigma; two daughters and a son-in-law Becky Moore of Enigma and Lucy and Steve Hand of Ocilla; a brother, Harold Akins of South Carolina; two sisters, Peggy Lastinger of Brunswick and Sue Copeland of Alapaha; four grandchildren and their spouses, Josh and Amanda Moore, Zach Moore, Michael Hand and Blake and Cassey Hand; two great-grandchildren, Gideon Moore and Levi Hand; and his special care-giver, Brenda Miller.
