Ernesto J DeMattia, 90, of Medford, passed peacefully from complications of Lung Cancer on Tuesday, December 6, 2016.
Ernesto was born in Boston's North End to John and Vincenza (Nuzzo) DeMattia on March 28, 1926. After moving to Medford in 1934, Ernest went on to graduate from Medford High School in 1944.
Following High School, Ernest voluntarily enlisted in the US Army Aircorp where he proudly served his nation in the Pacific Theatre during WWII as an Aircraft Mechanic.
Upon discharge, Ernesto quickly found his dream job as a repairman for Boston Gas Company where he worked for the next 38 years prior to retirement.
Ernesto had enjoyed his days since retirement relaxing at home spending time with family and loved ones enjoying every opportunity to equally embrace life's humor and sadness.
Ernesto is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Joseph, Chester and Francis (Billy) DeMattia; 2 sisters: Carmella Baglio and Concetta DeMattia, and is survived by his sister-in-law MaryLou DeMattia of Ipswhich; son Tony and Andrea DeMattia of Medford; daughter Susan Delaney of Moultonborough NH; nine grandchildren: Ashley Sheppard, Alexis, Justin, Melanie and Emily DeMattia, Joseph, Kimberlee, Courtney and Brittney Delaney. Ernest is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Sawtelle Hospice Home of Reading for their care and comfort in his final days.
Funeral from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, on Monday, December 12 at 9 AM followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Clement Church, 71 Warner St., Medford, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Visiting hours Sunday, December 11, from 4 through 8 PM.
