Ernest J. Gentili, 79, of New Bedford died December 4, 2016 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness surrounded by his family.
He was the husband of Lorraine A. (Cote) Gentili, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Ernesto and Rosa (DiPasquale) Gentili, he lived in Acushnet for 52 years before moving to New Bedford 4 years ago.
Mr. Gentili was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church.
He was formerly employed as district manager of Big G Supermarkets and Valueland Supermarkets for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Gentili was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Society, ACA and the Italian Literary Club.
He enjoyed bowling, trips with family and friends to the casinos and many afternoons at Angelica Point. He was an avid New England Patriots and New York Yankees fan.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Paul Gentili and his wife Linda of Berkley; 2 daughters, Gina Perry of New Bedford and Laurie Alfonse and her husband Joseph of Acushnet; a brother, Alfred Gentili of New Bedford; 6 loving grandchildren, Eric Perry, Matthew Perry, Taylor Alfonse, Morgan Gentili, Ryleigh Alfonse and Nicholas Gentili; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Mariano "Muddy" Gentili.
His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, December 10th at 10 AM in St. Francis Xavier Church. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Friday, December 9th from 5-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
