Obituary

DARTMOUTH- Florence Nelda Lemos, 89, died Thursday, November 17, 2016, at Hathaway Manor after a brief illness. She was the loving wife of Robert E. Lemos. They were married for 68 years.

Born in Westport, she was the daughter of Rosella A. (Mosher) and Frank M. S. Borden. She graduated from Westport High School and later from the Telegraph School in New Jersey. She attended Southeastern Massachusetts University. She worked as a telegraph operator at Western Union in New Bedford. A highlight of that experience was when she had to send out a telegram for James Cagney. She also worked as a bookkeeper at Continental Screw. Later in her career, she became an optometric assistant for Dr. Glennon in New Bedford.

Survivors include her widower; daughter Wendy Howland and her husband Charles of Dartmouth, son Gary and his wife Laurie of Durham, Maine, and a daughter Dr. Martha Lemos of Somerset; four grandchildren, Charles Howland, Kate Choate and her husband Michael, Hillary Lemos and her husband Brendan Tormey, Mark Lemos and his wife, Dr. Erika Wilson, and several nieces and nephews.

Florence, or “Flip”, as she was known by her friends, enjoyed traveling with Bob. Together they visited all 50 states. They also traveled to Europe, visiting Germany, Switzerland and England. In her leisure time, Flip enjoyed bird watching, walking on Horseneck Beach, bowling, reading, knitting and gathering with her loving family and dear friends.

She was an original member of the Gabbettes, a member of Allen’s Neck Community Club and Allen’s Neck Friends Meeting, the Audubon Society and the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Allen’s Neck Friends Meeting, 739 Horseneck Road, South Dartmouth, MA 02748.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
