Obituary

Manuel Burgo, 84, of New Bedford died Friday November 18, 2016 at home after a long illness. He was the husband of Patricia A. (Soares) Burgo.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Leopold and Rose (Rodriques) Burgo, he lived in New Bedford all of his life. He was a graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School.

He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.

Mr. Burgo was formerly employed by Revere Copper and Brass until his retirement. He was also a well-known boxing trainer and manager who operated Burgo's House of Champions for many years.

Manny was a four time New England Welterweight Champion and five time New England Golden Gloves Champion. He was inducted into the Ring 4 Hall of Fame. He was an avid sportsman who, in addition to boxing, played soccer and football.

Survivors include his wife; five children, Debra Rebeiro, Patricia Knight and her husband Troy, Manuel Burgo, Jr., Kim Billups and her husband Herb, and Lori Tabares; three sisters, Marie Smith, Laura Silva, and Anna Silva; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late Anthony Burgo and Jacqueline Jones, and brother of the late Kilda Filkins, Isabel Duarte, Leo, John, Arthur, Alfred, Joseph, and Beldwin Burgo.

His Funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 11 AM.
