Glenn A. Pope, 66, of Derry, NH, formerly of Holden, MA passed away Wednesday November 16, 2016, surrounded by his loving family at Elliot Hospital in Manchester. Mr. Pope was born February 23, 1950 in Worcester, MA and was a son of the late Norman and Shirley (Frary) Pope. He was raised and educated in Holden, MA. He was a graduate of Wachusett Regional High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Worcester State College. Glenn has been a resident of Derry for over 42 years.
Mr. Pope served as a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard and later transferred to the NH Air Guard. Glenn was a Math teacher for 29 years, first at Hudson Middle School for 11 years and during his time there he was awarded Teacher of the Year. He then taught for 18 years at Hood Middle School in Derry, again receiving the Teacher of the Year award. He liked to say he didn't teach math, he taught life.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joyce (Friberg) Pope, a son and his wife, Trevor A. Pope and Amy Sutton, a daughter and her husband, Tiffany and Jeff Bresler, five grandchildren, Lauren, Brayden, Lillian, Alexander and Tucker. He is also survived by his two brothers and one sister.
Glenn was much loved by all who knew him. He was an avid Harry Potter fan. During his retirement he read the series many times over. He was a passionate outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking, daily walks, and basking in the sun. His best times were with his family and playing with his grandchildren. Glenn touched many lives.
There are no calling hours. After cremation, a memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at First Parish Church, E. Derry Road in Derry at 11 am. Glenn has been actively involved in the historic rehab of First Parish Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Parish Congregational Church Building Rehabilitation PO Box 114 East Derry, NH 03041. The rehabilitation of the church was very important to him.
