Obituary

WAYLAND: Gustave A. Laurenzi, M.D., 90, died at his Wayland residence on November 9, 2016.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years Elise A. (Arcomano) Laurenzi. Loving father of Laurence D. Laurenzi and his wife Diane of Lexington and Norma Laurenzi of Belmont. Beloved grandfather of James T. Laurenzi and Erica E. Laurenzi both of Lexington.
Dr. Laurenzi received his medical degree from Georgetown University magna cum laude in 1953, and went on to serve as research fellow, chief resident, consulting professor, Director of the Pulmonary Division, and physician-in-chief at Yale Medical Center, Boston City Hospital, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New Jersey College of Medicine, and Saint Vincent Hospital, respectively. Before retiring in 2006, he served as Chief of Pulmonary Medicine at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Clinical Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. He was the recipient of numerous academic awards and honors through the years for his outstanding medical and teaching contributions. They include the American Thoracic Society Trudeau Fellowship, Massachusetts Thoracic Society Chadwick Medal, and the Massachusetts Society of Internal Medicine Internist of the Year. He was valedictorian of his medical school class and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.
Dr. Laurenzi was also an accomplished watercolor artist and a member of the Copley Society of Art for many years. Before entering the medical field, Dr. Laurenzi served with distinction in the European theater during World War II as a member of the First and Third Army Infantry Divisions.
Memorial Visitations will be held on Sunday, November 13, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm only at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (off Rte. 30), Wayland.
Private family services and interment will be held at North Cemetery in Wayland at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, his family kindly suggests that memorial gifts in Dr. Laurenzi’s memory may be sent to the Perkins School for the Blind Perkins Trust, 175 North Beacon Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
