Jorge R. Lobaton, age 73 of Brockton died November 8, 2016 at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was born in Arequipa, Peru to the late Marcial and Maria (Llerna) Lobaton and spent the last 42 years in the Boston and Brockton areas.
After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Peru, Jorge immigrated to the United States to further his learning. In 1971, he earned his Master’s Degree in Engineering from Boston University. In 1974 he earned his Master’s Degree in Education with a concentration in Counseling from Boston State College. This led to a life devoted to assisting others.
He first utilized his talents as an administrator with The Spanish Alliance in Roxbury, MA. This was one of the first Latino focused organizations in the area, not only helping established families in the city but also assisting with the immigration and naturalization of others. This group was the forefather of many Latino organizations.
Upon moving to Brockton in 1974, he was one of the founding members of the Asociacion San Martin. There, he worked towards the social development of the Latino community in Brockton. He developed and submitted countless proposals to local, state and federal programs attempting to get funding for the improvement of Brockton and the Spanish community herein. This group also provided therapy and assisted with student aid and college admission applications.
Continuing his work in the Brockton area, in 1980 Jorge signed on as an assessment coordinator with the Brockton Area Private Industry Council (PIC). Here, he was able to help others develop career plans. For 20 years, Jorge worked with others in creating resumes that best reflected their assets, assisting countless people in starting their career journey.
In 1999, Jorge went to work for the University of Massachusetts Career Works Center in a similar role. After 8 years, he retired after a career filled with helping others.
Beyond his work, Jorge will be remembered in Brockton as the host and producer of one of the longest running shows in BCCT history, “Programa Latino”. This show allowed him to bring important information as well as a nice mix of music and entertainment, to the Spanish speaking people of the Brockton area.
He was a jokester with a love of music and dancing. He thoroughly enjoyed his gardening. Above all, he loved his family. He will be sorely missed by his vast family and many members of the Brockton community.
Jorge is survived by his daughter Marcella Sarahs and her husband Sean and his granddaughter Selena Sarahs, of Brockton, 7 siblings; Jose Urday of Miami, Fl, Victor Acobo, Marcial Lobaton, Luisa Lobaton, Lucio Lobaton and Romulo Lobaton, all of Brockton and Laura Urday of Arequipa, Peru.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont St (Rte. 123) Brockton on Sunday, 2-6pm. The funeral procession with gather at the funeral home at 9am on Monday for a 10am funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Church.
