William R. Thaggard

Augusta, GA – Mr. William R. Thaggard, age 81, beloved husband of Uldine Thaggard and devoted father to son George N. Snelling, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2016. He grew up in Savannah, GA, graduated from Benedictine High School in 1953. He served in Education Administration at Groves High School in Savannah after obtaining a B.S. Degree in Zoology and two Masters Degrees from the University of Georgia. Bill was a lifelong supporter of UGA and served in the U.S. Navy for two years. His support for the Bulldogs was unsurpassed.
Bill’s many civic endeavors include Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver Award (Boy Scouts), Savannah District Scout Leadership Chairman, Camp Director, order of the Arrow Advisor and other Scouting Voluntary Positions. Bill served as President of the Ogeechee Audubon Society, Savannah Jaycee’s Board Member, Southern School Accreditation Committee Chairman, C.A.C.E. President and numerous other volunteer appointments.
Upon retirement, Bill moved to Augusta, GA and enjoyed a new life with new horizons. His two passions in life were weight lifting and the composition of Philosophical Articles. He competed in the Senior Weight Lifting Association and won over 80 tournaments in locations all over the southeast. His good friend Steve Colahan trained and accompanied Bill on those many excursions and became a second son. The family is forever grateful to Steve for his devotion to Bill. Bill was a keen observer and composed many serious articles concerning the meaning of life and man’s relationship to our world. His compositions are available online.
In later years, Bill enjoyed a close relationship with George, Steve, and many new friends. The worth of a man is best measured by the affection of his friends. In his regard, Bill Thaggard’s life was a huge success. He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of his friendship.
The funeral service will be Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 6:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son.
