Claude Herbert Chapman, age 73, of Chase City, VA passed away at home on Friday, November 4, 2016. He was born on March 19, 1943, in Saltville, VA, to the late Isaac Herbert Chapman and the late Susie Price Chapman. Claude is survived by his wife of 53 years, Brenda Gillispie Chapman, daughter, Rene' Chapman Jarman of Boydton, and two grandchildren, Chelsea Rene' Jarman, stationed in Bremerton, WA, with the United States Navy, and Joseph P. Jarman and his wife, Arianne of Orlando, FL. He is also survived by two brothers, Joe Chapman and John Chapman, two sisters, Mary Rosser and Rebecca Compton all of Altavista, VA; mother-in-law, Gertrude Gillispie of Chase City; sister-in-law Marie Gillispie Tanner of Emporia; special nephew, John Tanner and his wife, Kay, of Halifax County; special niece, Donna Taylor and her husband, Tony, of Lawrenceville, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, devoted friends and students.
Claude loved gardening, cooking, going to the lake, and time with his family, friends and his church. He cherished his garden and flowers, and also had a love for birds, especially hummingbirds. He was employed at Burlington Industries for 36 years and then began doing Real Estate Appraisal for Mecklenburg County. Claude also enjoyed substitute teaching at Bluestone Middle and High Schools. He is a member of First Baptist Church in Chase City, and a former member of Wylliesburg Baptist Church, and was very active in both. He served as a deacon, trustee, choir member, Sunday school teacher, was active in the Baptist Training Union at Wylliesburg Baptist Church, and also served on numerous other committees for both churches. He is a former member of the Jaycees, Ruritans and Woodmen of the World. He was also a former coach for Dixie Youth and Babe Ruth baseball.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2016 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Newcomb Allgood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 7, 2016 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Chase City. Interment will follow in Wylliesburg Baptist Church cemetery.
