FRAMINGHAM: Paul R. O’Neill, age 74, of Framingham, a former Ashland resident, died peacefully on November 4, 2016, at Carlyle House in Framingham, his home for the past year.
Born in Boston and raised on Mission Hill, he was a son of the late MA State Police Capt. Joseph P. and Ethel (Callanan) O’Neill. Paul was a graduate of Mission High School and continued his education at Tufts University. He enlisted in the US Army in 1962 and was sent to the Presidio in San Francisco where he learned the Russian language. He then served in Germany until 1966, interpreting intercepted Russian transmissions and working with encryptions.
Paul lived in Natick after his service and was employed for several years in the burgeoning computer industry with the Honeywell Corporation. He then accepted a position as a computer technician with Liberty Mutual Insurance where he spent the majority of his career. Paul settled in Framingham 17 years ago and had been a tech with a local manufacturing concern when he retired.
A great reader, Paul particularly enjoyed mysteries and kept his Russian language skills up through a love of Russian literature. The sound of classical music was a constant in his homes.
He is survived by his siblings, Joseph P. O’Neill and his wife Joan of Pembroke, Robert A. O’Neill and his wife Jean of Hingham, Richard J. O’Neill and his wife Kathryn of Natick, and Katherine A. Astapoveh and her husband Richard of Framingham; his nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Southern, Ann Marie Hunt and husband Scott, Dennis O’Neill, Maureen Rowe and husband Tim, Stephen O’Neill and wife Susan, Christine O’Neill and husband Philip Rossoni, Claire O’Neill, Cathleen McCarthy and husband Richard, Colleen O’Neill and spouse Lisa Ornberg, James O’Neill, Richard O’Neill, Jr. and wife Amy, Michael O’Neill and wife Jennifer, and Kevin O’Neill and wife Jennifer; and his grandnieces and nephews, Christopher, Jessica, Maggie, Lauren, Emily, John, Jack, Colin, Parker, Kaelin, and Braeden.
