Augusta - Mr. Thomas Rabb Houck, 94, entered into rest on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at Doctors Hospital following a brief illness.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Storey Chapel, First Baptist Church at 11:00 am with Dr. Rodger Murchison officiating.
Born in Orangeburg, SC, a lifelong resident of Augusta, Mr. Houck was an active member of First Baptist Church of Augusta and sanctuary choir. After graduation from the Academy of Richmond County and Junior College of Augusta, he served in the Pacific and Atlantic theaters during World War II and was commissioned a Navy Lieutenant after graduation from Officer Candidate School at Columbia University. As an avid outdoorsman and an owner of Augusta Sporting Goods, he founded the Ale, Quail and Tale Club to fellowship with gentlemen who enjoyed hunting sports. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose faith was strong and whose humor was unbounded and infectious.
Mr. Houck is preceded in death by his wife, Elle Carswell Houck, his parents Mr. Simpson Olin Houck and Mrs. Annie Elizabeth Rabb Houck, and his brother, Mr. Perry Houck. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Elle Houck Giles of Martinez, GA, Mrs. Camille Houck Hardy (Mr. Joseph Knox Hardy) of Martinez, and Mrs. Beth Houck Ligon (Mr. Ronald Allen Ligon) of Martinez, seven grandchildren, Murray Anne Giles, David Lawrence Giles (Diann), Elizabeth Giles, J. Knox Hardy, Jr. (Katie), Laura Camille Mellon (Charles), Dr. Jennifer Ligon Sinkus (Jason), Dr. Ronald Allen Ligon, Jr. (Ashley), and eight great grandchildren. The family expresses special thanks, love and appreciation to Mrs. Mary Smalley for many years of dedicated care and loyal friendship, and to the wonderful staff at Doctors Hospital.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 5 one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
