William A. "Bill" Smith, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at his home in Charlestown following a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 80 years old.
Bill was born in Boston on May 21, 1936, a son of the late Raymond Smith and Evelyn (Gould) Smith. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system. Bill was a truck driver for many years and worked for several trucking companies. Bill was a longtime member of Teamsters Union Local # 25. Bill was involved with Charlestown Youth Hockey for many years and especially the Milt Schmidt Hockey Program in Charlestown where he watched his 4 sons participate at each level of hockey. He was a former member of the Charlestown Militia and enjoyed traveling to Saratoga. Bill's enjoyment in his later years was watching all of his grandchildren and their sporting events.
Bill is the beloved husband of 60 years to Carmel "Minnie" (Vargas) Smith. He is the devoted father of William A. "Billy" Smith Jr. of Charlestown, Tina Marie Smith of Charlestown, Charles R. "Chuckie" Smith of Charlestown, Jason J. Smith of Charlestown and the late John K. Smith. He is the loving Papa to Jillian, Shauna, Shane, Taylor, Jonothan, Jason Jr., Cameron and his great-grandchildren Briana, Nolan and Gavin. He is the dear friend of James Hollien, Paul Grant and Jimmy Porter.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bill's Funeral on Monday, November 7, 2016 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Service in St. John's Episcopal Church, 27 Devens St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. His burial is private. His visiting hours will be on Sunday 2 - 5 P.M. in the funeral home.
