Obituary


Augusta, GA – Mr. James L. Hewett, III, 76, beloved husband of Phyllis S. Hewett, passed away at his residence on Monday, October 31, 2016.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, November 4, 2016 at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel with Dr. David McKinley officiating. Burial to follow in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Hewett, a native of Augusta, GA, was born on February 11, 1940 to the late James L. Hewett, Jr. and Iris Ioma Epps Hewett of Augusta. He was retired from GIW Industries, Inc. after 42 years of service. He was an employee of Platt’s Funeral Home of Augusta, GA and Evans, GA and Starling Funeral Home, Harlem, GA. He was a charter member of Overcomers Outreach Center, SBC. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a Gideon. Mr. Hewett served in the National Guard and Army Reserves for 6 years. He was a member of the American Foundry Society, Piedmont Chapter. He was a member of the Beech Island Agriculture Club. Mr. Hewett was an avid photographer. His main focus was on family and church. Vacations at the beach were a fun time. He was an active member of Warren Baptist Church where he was a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and a soul-winner. Mr. Hewett was married to the former Phyllis Strickland. He met her at Crawford Avenue Baptist Church and it was love at first sight. They were married 55 years.

Survivors include his wife Phyllis; daughter and son-in-law Phyllis Love H. Swain and Mark Swain, Evans, GA; son and daughter-in-law Rev. James L. Hewett, IV and Joette W. Hewett, Lancaster, SC; sister and brother-in-law Marion H. Rose and Harold Rose, O’Fallon, IL; brother and sister-in-law Epps N. Hewett and Cheryl C. Hewett, Fayetteville, GA; brother Richard S. Hewett, Augusta, GA; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Judy S. Kirkland and Larry Kirkland, Grovetown, GA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dwight and Betty Strickland, Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren Phillip Mark Swain and wife Jordan, Brett David Swain, Jessica Rose Rhyne and husband Max, Claire Elizabeth Hewett, and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. A son, Sean Christopher Hewett, preceded him in death on May 24, 1995, and also a sister, Iris I Hewett Hileman on April 9, 1981

The family suggests memorials to the church of your choice or Hebron Colony, Route 3, Box 300, Boone, NC, 28607, or the Gideons Memorial Bible, or to Heartland Hospice, 153 Davis Road, Augusta, GA, 30907.

Honorary pallbearers will be employees and their families of GIW Industries, Inc., Platt’s Funeral Home and Starling Funeral Home, the Koinonia Sunday School Class, Jimmy Cooper, and Marion Gardner.

Pallbearers will be Phillip Swain, Brett Swain, Jesse Powell, Max Rhyne, Byron Davis, Harry Shelton, and Sammy James.

A visitation with the family will be held Friday, November 4, 2016 from 1:00 PM until service time at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel.
