Obituary

Bailey, Audrey Nelsen a resident of Dover, formerly of Westwood, MA and Bristol, RI, died peacefully on October 27, 2016 surrounded by her loved ones. As always, family was first with Audrey. She was the beloved wife of 60 years to the late Robert Warren Bailey, and devoted mother to Christine Bailey Laidman and her husband, David of Dover, MA, Robin Elizabeth Burgel of Springfield, OH and the late Melissa Ann Bailey. She was also the cherished grandmother Nonny to her “heartbeats” Devon and Bailey Laidman and the late Phillip Burgel.

Born in 1925 in Freeport, Long Island, New York, Audrey chose to get a start on her career right out of high school and ventured into NYC to work as a fashion model. In short order she and met and married Bobby, a successful real estate developer, and they lived in the city for several years attending high profile events at several of the iconic establishments of that era – The Stork Club, 21 Club and El Morocco.

Moving out of the city to raise their three daughters, the Baileys opened an eponymous restaurant and exclusive mixed-use complex in Branford, CT, where they also enjoyed membership in the Pine Orchard Yacht Club for many years. Audrey and her family were always on the move playing tennis, boating on Long Island Sound or trekking to ski in Vermont on the weekends. In more recent years, Audrey was a superfan and could be found on the sidelines enthusiastically cheering on her grandchildren in their high school soccer and lacrosse games, and ski races. A proud and dignified woman, she will be missed for her natural grace and beauty, and an active curiosity and intelligence that drove her to learn more about current events and take great enjoyment in meeting new people.

A Celebration of Life is being planned. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Audrey’s name to Tippett Hospice House, VNA Care, Fund Development, 199 Rosewood Drive, Suite 180, Danvers, MA 01923 or via www.vnacare.org or the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or www.stjude.org For online guestbook, gfdoherty.com.
