Obituary

H. WINSOR NICKERSON, JR., age 85, of Hingham and Wellfleet, died on Wednesday, Aug. 3rd at the Queen Anne Nursing Home in Hingham after a period of failing health.

Born and raised in Winchester, MA, he was a graduate of New York Military Academy and Wentworth Institute.

He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.

After the war, he worked at the Kaplan Furniture Co. in Cambridge, then for the Home Insurance Co. and the New England Fire Insurance Rating Association.

A lifelong sailor and amateur boat builder, he had most recently built several small catboats for his grandchildren. For many years, he was a competitive skipper in the Wellfleet Yacht Club summer racing series. He was also a tinkerer who could fix almost anything.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Helvie E. (Honkalehto) Nickerson of Hingham; a son, Stuart Nickerson of Milton; three daughters, Elizabeth Ayers of York, Maine, Amy Nickerson of Shelburne, Vermont and Sally Nickerson of Hampton, New Hampshire; two sisters, Nancy Ryder of Orleans and Laurie O'Connell of Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Also survived by 8 grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and his faithful yellow lab companion, 'Periwinkle'.

A Memorial Service will be conducted on Friday, August 19th at 11:00 AM at the First Congregational Church, 200 Main St., Wellfleet. There are no visiting hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Wellfleet Site, Outer Cape Health Services, 260 Cranberry Highway, Orleans, MA 02653.
