Obituary




DARTMOUTH — Stanley Bettencourt, age 89 years, of Dartmouth, died on Friday, October 14, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was married to Lois (Judson) Bettencourt for 36 years prior to her death and his later years were shared with Rosamond Bernett who died in 2011, his most cherished friend and companion.

Stan was born in Middleboro, MA, Nov. 5, 1926 and raised by his parents John and Ila (Holmes) Bettencourt on the Ashley Farm in town. In 1943 he moved to Dartmouth and attended Dartmouth High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, stationed at the Naval Air Station in Boca Chica, Florida, during WWII.

Stan was very proud of his 66-year membership in the Abraham H. Howland Masonic Lodge becoming Master Mason and also 65 years as a member of the Noquochoke Lodge of Westport.

Stan was manager of the former MANCHESTER Hardware Store in Padanaram and retired from Mendell Electric Co.

For 30 years he served on Dartmouth Fire District No. 1, retiring at the rank of Captain and in earlier years could be seen running down the hill from his home to the station.

A member of the South Dartmouth Congregational Church, he was an avid New England sports fan of the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots and Bruins. He could often be found working in his yard or painting his house. He was an active cribbage player, loved bowling, bird hunting, playing softball and being on the department muster team.

Survivors include his daughter Linda Aguiar of Nantucket, daughter Sandra and her husband Stephen Howland of Dartmouth, his son Stanley ''Jake" Bettencourt Jr. and his wife Becky of Dart­mouth, grandchildren Stephen S. Howland and his wife Kaylee, Peter T. Howland, Matthew J. Aguiar, Alison T. Bettencourt and Brian A. Bettencourt and a great granddaughter Julianna A. Howland. He was the brother of the late Hazel Carr and Ruth Judson.

His family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers who assisted him.

Visitation will take place at the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. with a service at 11 a.m., followed by burial in South Dartmouth Cemetery.
