Obituary


Abington – Frederick J. Howell, Jr. 56, a resident of Abington, died unexpectedly on Sunday October 2. He was the beloved husband of Karen M. (Bosworth) Howell.

Born in Charlestown, and raised in Abington he was the son of Frederick Howell Sr. of Quincy and the late Jane (Murphy) Easttey.

Fred was a graduate of Abington High School. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from St. Anselm College and later continued his education, proudly earning his MBA, MSISM, ACE, CISSP, and was currently working toward his Doctorate Degree.

He loved his work and prior to his current job as Manager of Security and Privacy Consulting Services for RSM of Boston, he had worked as an Information Security Consultant with the Bose Corp. and for Attorney Generals’ Office of both MA and NH on Medicare Fraud.

Fred had also served as an adjunct professor at Curry College and for twenty years had taught a Masters’ program at Northeastern University as well as an online course on Computer Forensics for WPI.

Fred was a familiar face on the South Shore having served for nearly thirty years as a referee for Pop Warner, High School and College football. He was a member of the Eastern MA Assoc. of Interscholastic Football Officials where he had served as President and later as Secretary. He was also a Lacrosse official and a Baseball umpire for the Southern MA Umpires Assoc. as well as helping to organize the officials for the Pembroke Youth Flag Football League.

Because of his love for education, Fred had been a co-founder of the Brockton Library Foundation and was President of the organization for several years, dedicating support to public libraries in the city.

Fred was truly a “family man” and had enjoyed the many vacations they spent traveling.

In addition to his wife Karen and his father Frederick Sr., he is survived by his loving children James Howell and Julie Howell both of Abington, his brother Michael Howell of Upton and his sister Joan Howell of Braintree as well as many nieces and nephews.

His services will be held Friday October 7 at 9:30 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 AM in St. Bridget Church, Abington. Visiting hours will be held Thursday October 6 from 5:00-9:00 PM.
