Obituary


Whitman – Shirley S. (Paul) Clement 96, a longtime resident of Whitman, died Tuesday September 27 after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of the late David G. Clement, Jr.

Born in Elgin, Quebec, Canada she was the only child of the late William and Ethelind (Seager) Paul.

Shirley was educated in Quebec and Ontario schools and graduated from Lisgar Collegiate Institute in Ottawa, Ontario in 1938. She entered the Canadian Civil Service and remained there until 1947.

In 1949 she immigrated to the United States and came to live with relatives in Brockton. There she met and married her husband David G. Clement, Jr. who predeceased her in 1965 after moving to Whitman in 1961.

For many years she was an active member of the former First Presbyterian Church of Brockton until it’s closing in 1990 when the family joined the First Congregational Church of Whitman. While a member of the Presbyterian Church she was one of the founding directors of the Brockton Interfaith Committee, where she served as secretary for several years. She remained active in her church and was an active member of Church Women United a national movement of Christian women.

She had retired after many years from the USM Corporation of Whitman.

She is survived by her loving children David G. Clement, III and his wife Deborah of Pembroke, Nancy Yarletts and her husband Robert of Middleboro, W. Bruce Clement and his wife Gail, with whom she resided, of Whitman, Meredith L. Mullen and her late husband Frank of Middleboro and Janet R. Carrara of Carver as well as eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband David and her aunt Mrs. Goodwill D. Murray.

Her funeral service will be held Monday October 3 at 10:00 AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Burial will follow in the Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. Visiting hours will be held Sunday October 2 from 2:00-6:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Salvation Army, 216 Centre Street, Brockton, MA 02302 or to the First Congregational Church, 519 Washington Street, Whitman, MA 02382.
