Reta Jane Norman Carter, 91, was born in Booker, Texas, and died Tuesday in Cambridge. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Montgomery Carter, in 2000.
Reta grew up in Plainview, Texas, and graduated from Plainview High School in 1941. She received a B.A. from Texas Tech College and a M.A. from the University of Kansas in English literature in 1948. She married Robert Montgomery Carter of Plainview, Texas. Reta taught literature and composition at Wayland University from 1968 to her retirement in 1995. She moved to the Boston area in 2002 where she lived with her daughters until moving to an assisted living community in 2009.
Reta is survived by her daughters Jane Carter of Boston, Mary Carter and partner Evelyn Barnes of Boston, Page Carter and spouse Sandy Bodner of Medford, son Robert Carter of Horsehoe Bay,Texas, Cynthia Hester of Lubbock, Texas, granddaughter Morgan Carter Ripski and husband Michael Ripski and great grandsons Clyde and Oliver, of New Orleans. All will miss her dearly.
