Obituary

WESTON: Elizabeth “Betsey” (Stoddard) Spencer, 82, died peacefully in the care and comfort of her family with the assistance of Sunrise of Wayland, early Sunday morning, September 11, 2016 following a brief illness.
She was born in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of the late Arthur MacKay Stoddard and Katharine C. Fitzhugh.
Betsey was the devoted mother of Katharine Spencer of New London, NH; B. Mackay “Mac” Spencer and his partner Cindy Appleby both of Weston and Jonathan Spencer and his partner D.J. Mullen both of Framingham. Sister of Robert M. Stoddard and his wife Lou Ann of Wellesley. Also survived by several loved nieces, nephews, and their families as well as many dear friends and her former husband Bryant O. Spencer and his wife Ann of Weston.
Betsey spent her formative years on her beloved farm in Pomfret, Vermont and moved to Weston in 1945 and has called Weston home ever since.
Betsy was an accomplished horsewoman and loved riding, driving or anything horse related. She was a breeder of Morgan horses, showed them competitively and taught riding to many of the young people in the area at Spenmay Farms in Weston. In her youth, she was one of the founding members of the first 4-H Horse Club east of the Mississippi River as well as winning the New England Equestrian Championship several times and other numerous awards. She adored her Weston 4-H Club and devoted many years inspiring horsemanship and a love of horses as well as organizing Horse Shows for the local equestrians. Betsey loved being outdoors, was an avid gardener and retired member of The Weston Garden Club. Her love and devotion to horses and her family will be fondly recognized by everyone who knew her.

Memorial visitations will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2016 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte. 30), Wayland.
Private family interment will be held in the Spencer family lot in Linwood Cemetery in Weston.
In lieu of flowers her family kindly requests that memorial donations in Betsey’s memory may be sent to the Ruth B. Dickson Memorial Rings, c/o The Weston-Wayland Horse Show, Inc., PO Box 633, Weston, MA 02493.
