John Philip Zarella, Sr. of Taunton, formerly of Brockton and E. Bridgewater passed away on the afternoon of Thursday September 15, 2016 at Morton Hospital. Mr. Zarella was born on August 26, 1948 in Boston to the late George and Helen (Ahearn) Zarella. John made the decision to leave school early and serve his country during the Vietnam War as a Sailor in the United States Navy until he was honorably discharged on August 2, 1971. He was always proud of his military service and only spoke about it with dignity and grace.
For many years Mr. Zarella worked as a “Mr. Fix-it” of sorts. John also worked as a Brockton Police Officer. He was willing to help anyone with the variety of skills that he possessed. John was an avid fan of Boston sports, especially his New England Patriots. World history was a subject that Mr. Zarella loved to chat about and study. However his greatest love of all was for his family and he had an extra soft spot for his grandchildren; Ellieanna, Jordan, Emily, Janiya, Keyanna, Brianna and Michael.
Along with his 7 grandchildren, John leaves behind his children; Helen Zarella and her boyfriend Dennis of Attleboro, John George Zarella of Taunton and Barbara Zarella of New Bedford. Mr. Zarella was the brother of Geroge Zarella, Robert “Bob” Zarella and Mark Zarella.
John is reunited with longtime and loving companion Barbara Smith, who passed away on September 16, 2014.
In accordance with the family’s wishes all services will be held privately. Arrangements are under the care of the Taunton Memorial Funeral Home 8 Crapo Street (off Route 140/Tremont Street) in Taunton.
