Walter S. Jones, Sr., 95, of New Bedford passed away peacefully at 8:40 pm on Saturday September 10, 2016 after a brief illness.
Mr. Jones was the son of the late Frederick and Sadie Jones. He was predeceased by his wife Bertha Jones, brothers Frederick, Kenneth and Roger Jones, and former wife Edith Fox.
A lifelong resident of New Bedford, he will be most remembered for his 25 years as a New Bedford Police Officer. He retired in 1981 after a distinguished career that include a commendation in 1964 for entering a burning building with other officers to alert the residents.
He was a U.S. Army veteran stationed in the Southwest Pacific Theatre during World War II.
He is survived by son Walter Jones and wife Arlene, daughter Baunie McConnell and husband Thomas, grandsons Walter Jones, Ryan Jones and Peter McConnell and his wife Jacqueline, granddaughter Kate McConnell and fiancé Jimmy Alexander, three great-granddaughters and one great-grandson, his goddaughter Sadiemarie Mayes, and former daughter-in-law Rebecca Jones, as well as several nieces and nephews.
His Memorial Service will be held on Monday September 19, 2016 at 10:30 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. His family will receive visitors on Monday from 9:30-10:30 AM prior to the service.
