Obituary

Baghai, Ali A. 95, of Wellesley, beloved husband for 68 years of Betty (Lehman) passed away peacefully on September 11, 2016. A kind and gentle soul, he always put family first.

Born in Iran, he studied in Paris and Berlin. Upon receiving a BS in Engineering at Tehran University he enrolled at the University of Michigan where he received two Masters degrees and married Betty, a fellow graduate student in 1948. They moved to Pittsburgh, PA where he joined Gulf Oil Research and became an early pioneer in the application of computers to solve complex engineering problems. In 1963 he joined Stone & Webster Engineering Corp. in Boston. Licensed as a Professional Structural Engineer, Ali became well known in developing computer models for seismic and pipe stress analysis in power plant design. Following his retirement he became active in the community. He loved libraries and could often be found there reading and assisting others . Each Spring, he volunteered to help seniors file tax returns, work he continued into his late eighties. As a passionate walker, he was well known for leading groups with Betty or being seen strolling the sidewalks and pathways of Wellesley.

Ali is survived by his beloved wife Betty, son Hassen (Robin), and daughter Nina (Keith). Proud grandfather of Holly (Paul), Ali (Kristin), Jeffrey, James and step grandchildren Dylan and Lauren. Proud great grandfather of Haley, Jack, Charlie, Brayden and Callen, plus many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his dear daughter Lois.

A private family memorial service is planned for a future date. Donations in Ali's memory may be made to the Wellesley Free Library Foundation, 530 Washington St. Wellesley, 02482.
