John A. Weckbacher, 92 of Abington, Massachusetts died peacefully at home on September 15. Born in Hyde Park, Massachusetts in 1924, he was the son of the late George and Sarah (McEachern) Weckbacher and was brother of the late George Jr., Joseph, Frederick, Edna, Helen, Dorothy and William. He is survived by his brother Theodore and his wife Elizabeth of Halifax, Laura Weckbacher of Hanson, Kathleen Sneyd of Roslindale and Dorothy Torpey of Billerica.
After graduating from Hyde Park High School in 1942, he enlisted with the U.S. Army during World War II and served in Normandy and France with 387th Coast Artillery Bn.
He was the husband for 65 years of the late Winifred (Torpey) Weckbacher and father of the late Winifred Tautkus of Hanson. He is survived by John Jr. of Abington, Stephen of Abington, Paul of Halifax, Maureen Moody of Abington, Christine Fox of Plymouth, Carol Butler of Ossippee, NH, Teresa Gillis of Kingston, Mary Fichera of Middleboro and Anne Foley of Bridgewater. “Jack” was the proud Grampa of 25 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren and will be dearly missed by all. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was employed for several years by the New York, New Haven Railroad and operated his own painting business for more than 20 years. He loved hunting and fishing especially with his grandchildren and enjoyed trips up country with his family. He also loved to play his guitar and sing and in later years enjoyed working on woodworking projects in his “shop”.
His services will be held Tuesday September 20th at 8:15AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9:00 AM in St. Bridget Church, Abington. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Rockland. Visiting hours will be held Monday September 19th from 4:00-8:00 PM.
