Hugh Jones
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Friday, September 9, 2016, Mr. Clarence Hugh Jones, 91, loving husband of 47 years to the late Mary Elizabeth Storey Jones.
Hugh was born in Augusta, GA on August 11, 1925 to the late James G. Jones, Sr. and Mamie Rebecca Rich Jones. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater as a Flight Mechanic aboard the USS Shangri-La. He remained in the Naval Reserve as he began his civilian career in the truck and automotive service industry, retiring from Bagby’s Automotive.
He loved to be outdoors whether it was work or play. Hugh took great pride in keeping up his lawn and gardens and fixing anything around the house. He was a member of Central Church of Christ and he enjoyed watching his Atlanta Braves or even just listening on the radio. He loved golfing and everything about the Masters tournament.
If one word were to describe the life of Hugh Jones it would be service. It defined his career, it described his behavior toward his family, friends, and customers. Fittingly, in his last few years he was blessed to be the recipient of service from the incredibly compassionate and loving staff of the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home.
Family members include his son: Gregory Hugh Jones, MD (Lisa) of Florence, SC; daughter: Pamela Jones Plunkett of Evans, GA; grandchildren: Jennifer Renee Jones of Charleston, SC, Paul Kent Plunkett, III of Atlanta, GA, and Taylor Austin Jones of Florence, SC; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers: Wesley D. Jones, Ralph Jones, and James Jones, Jr.
A graveside service will be Monday, September 12, 2016 at 4:00 P.M. in Hillcrest Memorial Park with Navy honors. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home, 1101 15th St., Augusta, GA 30901.
