Obituary



Worcester - Thomas F. Dowd Sr., 84, of Worcester died peacefully on Wednesday, September 7th in the UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus while surrounded by his family.
Tom was married to Joan T. (Jeffrey) Dowd for 57 years until she passed away in 2011. He is survived by his nine children; Kathy Dowd Murphy and her husband Fran of Charlton, Linda Ciras of Worcester, Debbie Dowd-Foley and her husband Jim of Charlton, Maureen Robidoux and her husband Rick of Leicester, William Dowd and his wife Andrea of Holden, Thomas Dowd Jr. and his wife Judy of Charlton, Patty Hainsworth and her husband Tim of Worcester, Mary Swenson and her husband John of Oxford, and John Dowd of Worcester. He also leaves two brothers, Edmund Dowd of Worcester and Frederick Dowd of Auburn; three sisters; Virginia Axton of California, Eileen Scopetski of Northborough, Patricia Dowd of Virginia; 25 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
He was born in Worcester, son of the late Edmund F. and Mabel F. (Macomber) Dowd and is predeceased by a brother, Francis Dowd and two sisters, Mary Dowd and Margaret Lovely.
Tom worked as a firefighter for the City of Worcester for 28 years. He was stationed and retired from South Division serving on Engine 13 and Aerial Scope 2. Tom also worked a second job for many years as a painter and wallpaperer.
A graduate of Worcester Boy’s Trade High School, he was also a lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of the Angels Church and a member of the Worcester Fireman’s Relief Association. Tom followed all of the Boston sports teams, especially the Red Sox. He enjoyed spending time in his garden, traveling throughout New England, and those who knew him well remember how important family was to him.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 13 from the Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home 12 Hammond Street with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in Our Lady of the Angels Church 1222 Main Street. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Monday, September 12 from 4 – 8 PM in the funeral home.
