Obituary

SPILIAKOS, Panos (Panayiotis) D. Of Sudbury, passed away on August 31 following a period of declining health. He was 75. He was born in Vresthena (near Sparta), Greece in 1941, the son of Dimitrios P. Spiliakos and Maria (Louvari) Spiliakos. He grew up in Thessaloniki, attending Anatolia College and graduating from the Fifth Gymnasium. He joined the Sea Scouts, attaining rank equivalent to an Eagle Scout. He played basketball for Aris Thessaloniki B.C. and for the junior and senior Greek National basketball teams. He immigrated to the United States in 1959, graduating from MIT in 1966 with a degree in naval architecture, and he later studied at the Sloan School of Management. He returned to Greece in 1972 and worked as a general contractor, constructing one of the first buildings in Thessaloniki with both underground parking and multiple elevators. He later became the general manager of a particle board manufacturing plant outside Thessaloniki. In 1987, Mr. Spiliakos and his family moved to Boston, where he worked in real estate development and eventually became the Executive Director of the Board of Trustees of Anatolia College. Throughout his life, Mr. Spiliakos volunteered for, or was a member of, a number of non-profit organizations. In Greece, for the American Farm School and as the President of the Alexander the Great Foundation, Inc. In the U.S., as President of the MIT Club of Boston, as Supreme President of the Pan Macedonian Association, and as a member of the Order of AHEPA and of the Alpha Omega Council. He was deeply involved in his church, St. Demetrios of Weston, where he served as a director of the Junior Orthodox Youth group, on the Parish Council and as a member of the Church Choir for 10 years.

Mr. Spiliakos is survived by his wife of 49 years Eleanor (Love) Spiliakos of Sudbury; his son Dimitris P. Spiliakos and his wife Caitrin, of Medford; his daughter Dorothy-Maria (Spiliakos) Hoimes and her husband Matthew, of Stow; and by his grandchildren Andreas Panayiotis Hoimes and Eliana Maria Hoimes, also of Stow. He is also survived by his sister Stavroula (Spiliakos) Papathanasiou, of Athens, Greece; by his aunt Maria (Spiliakos) Grill of New York, NY and by many nieces, nephews and many extended family and friends.

Visiting hours at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., (Rt.16) WELLESLEY, on Monday, September 5, from 4-8pm.  Funeral service at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 57 Brown St., Weston, on Tuesday, September 6, 10am with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, 353 Concord Rd., Sudbury.
