Peyton was born in Spokane, WA, to Jane Hawes and Franklin W. Greenough. He married Donna Reekie in 1959. They have four children: Karen Greenough, Ellen Fredericks, Bruce Greenough, and Jessica Jespersen; and six granddaughters: Heather, Nicole, and Courtney Fredericks; and Katie, Annie, and Emma Greenough.
Peyton graduated from the University of Washington in 1958 with a B.S. in Pharmacy. He was the co-owner of Greenough's IGA in Spokane, and then the owner of Spokane Washer and Greeno-Clean. He was a member of Rotary in Spokane and Coeur d'Alene. His final employment was as camp ranger at the Girl Scout Camp Four Echoes on Lake Coeur d'Alene. Donna and Peyton enjoyed 11 years living at the camp.
In 1995, they retired to Sequim, WA, for 21 years, where Peyton was a member of North Olympic Sail & Power Squadron and Commander in 2001. He enjoyed tutoring at Greywolf Elementary and working on the grounds committee at Sequim Community Church.
