Nery, Robert A. “Bob” of Abington, MA passed on to his reward on August 25, 2016 at the age of 92. He is survived by his wife of nearly 69 years, Genelle Maness Nery; his son Thomas Nery and wife Sharon of Mansfield, MA; daughter Elizabeth LaPointe and husband Kenneth of Narragansett, R.I. and their sons Christopher and Jeffrey; daughter-in-law Karen Nery of Apex, N.C.; grandson Carl Nery and his wife Kristen, granddaughter Abigail Stephenson and her husband Mark, great grandchildren Lydia Stephenson and Robert Nery; and brother Raymond Nery of Raleigh, N.C. Bob was predeceased by his eldest son Robert Nery, Jr. One of five children born to Mary( Palermo) Nery and Raymond Nery,
Bob was raised in Lawrence, MA. He is a graduate of Lawrence High School and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State College in 1948.
He proudly served in the Army Air Force during World War II as a Gunnery Instructor. Upon completion of active duty, he joined the Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1958 as a First Lieutenant.
Bob began his career as a Mathematics teacher at Whitman High School, then joined the engineering firm of Stone & Webster in Boston, MA; he was a pioneer in drafting computerized steamtables for the design of power plants, one of his many achievements as an engineer. Upon retiring from Stone & Webster in 1982, Bob started his own consulting business, traveling throughout the country teaching power plant economics.
A long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Abington, Bob could always be counted on to lend his fine tenor voice to the choir. His love for music included prowess as a pianist, a talent he displayed as a volunteer performer at retirement and nursing facilities throughout the South Shore.
Bob was an avid woodworker and took great joy in sharing his first-rate efforts with family and friends. Many a member of the First Baptist Church was a recipient of his well-crafted casserole holders!
His interests were varied, extending from auto mechanics to writing poetry, building model airplanes to keeping apprised of technological advances. His community involvement included many years as a Cub Scout Master
.
Bob’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service on Friday, September 9, 2016 in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 at the rotary circle) Whitman at 4:00 p.m. with visiting hours prior to his service from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
