Obituary

CHICOPEE – Gregoire G. Rochon, 92, a longtime resident of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, August 17, 2016. He passed into Eternal Life at Elaine Center at Hadley surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in L’Ange Guardian, Province of Quebec, Canada on January 9, 1924, a beloved son of the late Emile and Eva (Menard) Rochon. He was raised in Troy, Vermont and settled in the Fairview section of Chicopee around 1956. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II with the Air Transport Command and attained the rank of Corporal. He received the American Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, he came to Chicopee and was employed as a machine assembler and painter at the former Worthington Pump Company now Atlas Copco in Holyoke. He also established the Fairview Bait and Tackle Shop with his wife which he owned and operated for over 40 years. He truly loved his business and his many loyal customers who became lifelong friends. During his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, bottle digging, gardening and spending time with his family. He was a man of many talents and was often referred to as “Mr. Fix-It” by his many friends and family. Most of all, he was a wonderful family man who loved his family and his many friends. Active in his Catholic Faith, he was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Violet M. (Blanchard) Rochon who was Called Home on May 24, 2012. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his four dear brothers, Armand, Clement, Lucien and Edgar Rochon; and his four dear sisters, Madeline Rochon, Loretta Dubray, Lucille West and Alice Talbot. He leaves his four loving children, Gilbert G. Rochon and his wife, Trudy, of Ware, Pauline N. Novak and her husband, Robert, of Leominster, Mary Jane Swaim and her husband, William, of Chicopee and Dennis M. Rochon and his wife, Susan, of South Hadley; his ten cherished grandchildren; his seven cherished great-grandchildren; his two dear brothers-in-law, Ralph Blanchard and his wife, Nancy, and Richard Blanchard and his wife, Phyllis; and his two dear sisters-in-law, Theresa Blanchard and Claire Brown; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Rochon and Blanchard families. His funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, August 23, 2016 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Committal Service with United States Air Force Military Honors will follow the Mass at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, August 22, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute/Jimmy Fund, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
