TEWKSBURY - Mrs. Virginia Marie (McCarthy) Cogan, age 90, a well known former resident of Tewksbury, died unexpectedly at her Nashua residence on Saturday evening, August 13. She was the beloved wife of Walter Joseph Cogan Sr., who died in 1993.
“Ginny” was born in Lowell, in July 1926, the oldest of thirteen children of the late Frank and Gladys (Williams) McCarthy, was raised in Lowell and graduated from Keith Hall. After her marriage to “Wally” they moved to North Street in Tewksbury to raise their family. She had been a resident of Tewksbury until moving to Nashua two years ago for family support. Virginia was a faithful parishioner of St. William’s Church in Tewksbury and attended daily Mass. In her later years, she was active at the Tewksbury Senior Center, travelling, line dancing, and spending time with friends. She also joined the Red Hatter’s Society, and participated in many church and Senior community plays and shows.
She leaves her children, Richard J. and wife Robin Cogan of Boise, ID, Arleen and husband Dennis MacCallum of Wilton, NH, W. Joseph and wife Michelle (Freitag) Cogan Jr. of Merrimack, NH, her son-in-law Michael Travers of Haverhill who was husband of her late daughter Margaret Mary “Peggy” Travers; eight grandchildren, Derek and wife Mary Fernandes of ID, late grandson, Seth Cogan, Teryn MacCallum of Lyndboro, who was wife of the late Dennis MacCallum, Daniel MacCallum of Wilton, NH, Patrick Cogan of Nashua, Timothy Cogan and his fiancée Marjorie Newcomb of Concord, NH, Todd Silva of Seabrook, NH, Damon and his wife Danielle Silva of Haverhill; four great grandchildren, Seth, Jordin, Piper, and Wyatt; her siblings, Edward and wife Tina McCarthy of Tyngsboro, Mary Pincence of Dracut, David and wife Fran McCarthy of Chelmsford, Dorothy and husband Glen Moore of GA, Kathy and husband Jim Taylor of North Haven, CT, Richard McCarthy of Hudson, NH, Frank and wife Brenda of Lowell; deceased siblings, Eloise Kenner, William A. McCarthy, John McCarthy, Daniel McCarthy, Gerald McCarthy; sisters-in-law, Ann McCarthy of Saugus, Cindy McCarthy of Raymond, NH, and Grace McCarthy of PA; and over one hundred nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
Visiting hours Friday, Aug. 19, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Tewksbury Funeral Home, corner of 1 Dewey and 975 Main Sts. (Rte 38) TEWKSBURY CENTER, Ph. (800 in MA or 978) 851 29509.
