TEWKSBURY - Mrs. Evelyn D. (Spellman) McCabe, age 84, died peacefully on Friday evening, August 12 at her Tewksbury home, in the loving care of her daughters and grandchildren assisted by Hospice, after a long period of declining health. She was the beloved wife for sixty-one years of William J. McCabe who died in 2013. Mrs. McCabe joins her beloved husband and late son John J. McCabe, now at peace. John’s murder and forty-two year investigation was a local and national news story chronicled by the news media, and televised nationally.
She was born in the Dorchester section of Boston in June 1932, and raised in Dorchester where she graduated from the Jeremiah E. Burke School. She and her late husband settled in Tewksbury in 1952 to raise their family. In addition to her job as a mother, she worked for forty-five years for the Tewksbury Public School System as a Library Aid at the Heathbrook, Trahan, Dewing and North Street Schools.
Evelyn was a communicant of St. William’s Church, attended daily Mass at the Oblate Father’s Residence in Tewksbury. Evelyn was an accomplished musician with the keyboard, and loved league bowling.
She leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah McCabe-Atamanchuk and her husband Stephen of Merrimack, NH, Roberta McCabe-Donovan and her husband David of Dracut; seven beloved grandchildren, Jon Howarth and his wife Kathryn of Windham, NH, Matthew Vincenty of Somerville, Lindsey Vincenty of GA, Carolanne Donovan of Dracut, Rebecca Atamanchuk-Boutin and her husband Dylan Boutin and Sara-Jean Steele and her husband John Steele all of Merrimack, NH, Emily Donovan of Dracut; five adored great grandchildren, Julia, Lilly, Zoey, Spencer and John; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Gloria Spellman of Windham, NH; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours Tuesday, Aug. 16, from 4:00 until 7:00p.m. in the Tewksbury Funeral Home, corner of 1 Dewey and 975 Main Sts. (Rte. 38) TEWKSBURY CENTER Ph. (800 in MA or 978) 851 2950. Her funeral will begin Wednesday, Aug. 17, at 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St. (Rte. 38) Tewksbury.
